Why is it necessary to be born as human beings in this world in order to attain ‘Moksha’ and bind away from the cycle of life and Death? May 17, 2008

Ans.     Baba says, “Till you cross the river, a boat is necessary. So also, till you reach the divine destination, you need the human body as your vehicle. Be healthy, do not eat impure or unclean food and impair your health.”

Thus, our body is a kind of vehicle that will lead us to the Lord. Human beings are the highly gifted creatures in the world. One attains this beautiful body after doing many good deeds in their past life. We should not let it go waste and utilize our time in doing fruitful activities like Seva, Bhajan, Namasmarna and keep it healthy, so that there stays no barrier in the journey towards the Lord.

Emphasizing the need for ‘Education for life and not mere living’, the district president of Sri Sathya Sai Organisation of Goa clearly chalked out the motto of the seminar on Value education attended by 120 delegates compromising of school principals, management members and teachers representing 40 institutions in and around Goa. It was an appeal to teachers to take value back to their own schools and enable the child to journey one inch inwards despite man’s ability to externally conquer the frontiers of the universe.

The first speaker Mr. Nimish Pandya, a leading advocate and international faculty member for education in human values, considered the teacher as an effective medium for propagation of human values. The speaker averred that if education genuinely meant all-round personality development of the child, then a child scoring a hundred in moral science and whose soul is stirred by the sweet voice of the church anthem should have equal recognition as a child scoring hundred marks in mathematics. He condemned the education system where children in classrooms were made to think and say how man belonged to animal kingdom. Calling this a fundamental flaw’, he urged teachers to call upon the spark of divinity latent in each child enabling him to explore his own potentiality. The task of spreading value education was an individual enterprise that rested heavily on a noble saying – “practice should always match percept”. The speaker lamented the fact that society always experienced the dearth of good people and how a veteran lawyer like Nani Palkhivala had once mentioned to him that the greatest bane of Indian life is the “Crisis of character”.

The second speaker of the day, B.G. Pitre, Director of the institute of Sri Sathya Sai education for values in Mumbai also stressed on the need for ‘people with the sterling moral character’. Education , he stated, should not have the teacher ‘putting into’ the child chunks of information but should have him ‘bring out’ the best that is hidden in the child. It is the sculptor’s vision and skills that enable him to transform a patch of mud onto a statue . So likewise, the teacher should play role of sculptor in the classroom. The speaker’s presentation had a relevant saying the words of Confucius: Every piece of marble has a statue waiting to be released… As sculptor to the stone, so the teacher to the child…

The speaker then detailed the curriculum for value education compromising of prayers, positive thinking, tales of heroic adventures despite adversity, role playing and value-games. The speaker concluded the session by stating that every individual should be keen on practicing the values in his own life for children close their ears to advise but open their eyes to example.

Hands that help are holier than the lips that pray’ these beautiful words of Swami seemed to come into reality in ‘Free medical camp’ conducted by Margao samiti in a small village of its own taluka. A locality compromising of mostly slums was selected. Four doctors, specialized in different streams with the aid of dozens of Sai youths successfully diagnosed 122 adult patients and 60 child patients. Medicines were given to them free of cost.

In the meantime, Sai brothers joined hands to clean up a playground for school children. Other sai youths kept themselves busy in Narayan seva by serving food to over 200. Blessed souls!
